Lite Source funky lights to jazz up your shack!!

Lite Source has released these funky lights to jazz up your shack. At 3.5" in diameter and 9.5" tall they shall definitely make an interesting prelude to an awkward make out session, which ends in the discovery of your collection of Care Bears, complete humiliation and indefinite social out casting.

The light emitted comes from LEDs only, as such, the amount of light provided will not be enough to make out the acne-ridden surface of your skin, but it will provide enough illumination to make you appear slightly appealing, prior to the Care Bare cascade of events. The linear pattern lamp will set you back $70.71, whilst the firework-like design will cost a little more at $84.60. For the record, those Care Bears weren't even mine—I was looking after them for a friend.

WND Atom Duo Cellphone Has Dual Identities!

The iPhone makes pretty decent use of its gravity sensor with Safari, but that's something of a kid's trick compared to the WND DUO Atom, which flips between two SIM cards as you flip it from top to bottom (or is it bottom to top?), making it easy to maintain two separate accounts. Like one for wife, one for your girlfriend—just don't turn it the wrong way. It's also a touchscreener, so the keypad and screen re-orient themselves accordingly. Hit the jump for the nitty-gritty and another glamour shot of this unlocked tri-band GSM trickster.

Diamond-Encrusted iPod shuffle Takes 'Fool and His Money' Prize

This one even outdoes that 18-karat solid gold iPod shuffle we pointed out to you last month, with this one tipping the more-money-than-brains pricetag scale of $20,000 compared with that solid gold shuffle's $19,343 price. Adding even more expense and tawdriness to the equation are diamond-encrusted headphones. Although it's hard to decipher the Scandinavian language in which this is described, it looks like there are 430 diamonds festooning this otherwise utilitarian and screenless digital audio player. The irony doesn't escape us; at least they could've waited for the new iPod nano, and gussied that up with diamonds.

Nike and Transformers Combine Powers To Birth Marine Convoy

The only good that came out of Michael Bay's mutilation of Transformers is that cool shit like this Nike/Transformers toy keeps coming out. Similar to the Optimus Prime and Megatron toys from earlier this year, this Nike Free 7.0 transforms into a character known as Marine Convoy. Unlike the other two, Marine Convoy seems to be an original character who shamelessly displays the Nike Swoosh across his chest and wears the shoe he transforms into. Like most of these offbeat Transformers toys, it's Japan only and costs 2500 Yen.

Samsung's colorful line of YP-U3 DAPs

Samsung rolled out its USB-tyle mp3 player 'YP-U3'. With built-in USB connector, it can be connected to pc directly to download files, and it can be also charged via USB port. You can navigate menu or control buttons by simply touching the screen. It supports 66 hours of voice recording(1GB/32kbps) and FM radio tuner.

It is available in five colors - black, white, pink, green, and blue. Depending on memory capacity, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB model are available.

Bomba Alarm Clock

Dutch designer Will Vanden Vos takes an old style and gives it a new look. In much the same way of older clocks and information boards (like the ones you used to find in airports, and still see in many train stations), the Bomba Alarm Clock displays time by dropping the top half of the card down, exposing the number behind. But what's most eye- catching is the exposed machinery.

With so many gears promising to twist and turn, it's nice that Mr. Vos decided to eschew any sort of covering for his clock. It's a shame there's no video to be found. The numbers are a nice, rounded typeface, come lit by blue and white LEDs, and probably make that signature flip card "tick" when the time changes. No word on what kind of noise it makes when the alarm goes off, but you can find out for yourself for $80 from Japanese importer Visions Coax.

Sharp WillCOM W-Zero 3 Advance

Sharp's WillCOM W-ZERO 3 smartphone will receive an upgrade, and will henceforth be known as the W-ZERO 3 Advance. Sounds more like a video game console if you ask me. Anyway, the upgrade includes a slimmer body (17.9mm) complete with a new 3" 480 x 800 LCD display. It shares roughly the same form factor as that of the HTC Vox, and runs on Windows Mobile Classic. Features include a numeric keypad, a sliding QWERTY keyboad, and a mini USB port where you can hook up an external Bluetooth or GPS module. No idea on how much this costs nor whether it will make it Stateside. Looks like a simple and elegant business handset than anything else.

Dubai Puts a New Spin on Skyscrapers

While the architectural playground that is Dubai isn't running low on innovative buildings, David Fisher is hoping to add yet another skyscraper to the mix with his self-sufficient and energy generating Twirling Tower. The 68-story "combination hotel, apartment, and office" would sport floors that each rotate 360-degrees in the span of about 90 minutes, creating a "constantly changing architectural form." His claims begin to elicit suspicion, however, when a promotional video (seen after the break) for the building claims that it can snag enough wind to not only power the building itself, but to energize ten other similar buildings just like it. Of course, we aren't taking that too seriously considering that he actually mentions that supplying electricity to the floors would be "similar to how a moving train captures power by staying in constant contact with a power source, like an overheard wire or third rail." Nevertheless, Mr. Fisher sure seems determined to get this thing up in the sky, but as with most big dreams in Dubai, moving beyond the drawing board is where things get tough.

How To Overclock a DS Lite

Here's a guide to underclocking and overclocking your DS Lite. With this, you can set the speed anywhere from 0.66x normal to 1.8x normal, which both lets you slow down action games like the new Mario and speed up games like Phoenix Wright (which annoyingly has no setting for making the dialogue faster).

The process isn't too difficult if you're handy desoldering and soldering things, but it requires a steady hand and probably an hour or so.

GP2X Personal Entertainment Player

One of the biggest selling points of games consoles is their plug and play nature. Game goes in, console comes on, happy gamer. No safe mode, no updating drivers, no viruses and definitely no boot disks to free up 600k of base memory.

However, there is always the type of person that enjoys a good challenge, and the game itself doesn’t provide enough. For this sort of person, the GP2X is perfect as it is a lot more than a gaming platform - it’s a multifunctional entertainment device with more flexibility than a Russian gymnast.

From the outside, the GP2X looks like a fairly typical handheld gaming device. It’s not as sleek as the PSP, but perhaps shares more in common with the Sega Game Gear. There is a joystick on the left, accompanied by four buttons on the right - A,B,X and Y. At the top of the player are the L and R shoulder buttons, as seen on the PSP. Naturally there are the traditional start and select buttons as well as volume control. Headphone output is complemented by internal stereo speakers.

The device is powered by two AA batteries, although should you want to use it for prolonged periods of time in a single place, you can power it with a 3.3V DC adapter. At the very top of the device is an SD card slot, which you’ll need to populate as there is only 64MB of NAND memory onboard.
Connecting to the device is done via a USB 2.0 connection, although I found it to be particularly slow at transferring. You may have better luck using a card reader.

At the very base of the device is the “EXT” connection. This is where things get a little interesting. For a few quid more you can buy a cable for outputting to a Television - nice! But you can also use this for connecting to extra storage (hard drives for instance). I’ve even briefly read about using this to convert the device in to a fully fledged PC or router.
The screen resolution is 320 x 240 which I assume is connected via an analogue interface due to the occasional diagonal lines I see running across the screen - pixel clock issues perhaps? Although there is fine tuning for this, you don’t expect to see this in a modern device.

At the very heart of the device is a Linux Operating System. The FirmWare is completely upgradeable (in fact there are several alternative versions available and under development by third parties) and you can install more applications than you can shake a stick at, but included as standard is support for DivX/xVid movie playback, MP3/OGG/WMA audio playback, photo viewing and e-books.

Although it does all of these things admirably, it doesn't really shout out as a finished product - it’s more of a platform. There is already a lot of open source software ported to this device and there is an entire community of people doing both software and hardware modifications to their GP2Xs. This is what makes the product unique.

For the less-geeky, the real killer application is emulation. Pretty much every emulator imaginable is available, from arcade machines to GameBoy, SNES and Playstation. Getting games is usually pretty easy, although very few of them are technically “free”. You still have to own the original games in order to legally play them. Some companies have made them free, or just abandoned them long ago (a Google for Abandonware might put you in the right direction).

Interpreters are around for many other games too - including Quake, Hexen, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Transport Tycoon and my personal favourite - ScummVM. Scumm is the engine used by Lucasarts for most of its adventure games - this includes the Monkey Island Series, Sam N Max and Day of the Tentacle to name a few.

Although the device has improved since its first incarnation, it is not exactly user friendly. All the little niceties that you expect to see on a polished product aren’t there and it certainly isn’t a plug and play gaming device. However, if you are of mild intelligence it’s not hard to get going. The more you put in to the device, the more you get out of it.

Verdict

With between five and ten hours of play time on a set of batteries, this isn’t bad and AA cells are easy to come by. If you’re like me and you’ve got a soft spot for games that are past their prime and like a good fiddle, you will love the GP2X.

Datel's Wii Drive Doctor

Datel's Wii Drive Doctor - the 'ultimate home mod tool', the easy backup tool for Wii?

Datel are once again to take a trip over to the 'grey side' of gaming accessories with the Wii Drive Doctor. They are dubbing as the total drive kit for the Wii and it DOES REQUIRE SOLDERING, a mainstream manufacturing of accessories selling a product that requires soldering - what's the industry coming to :)? They claim the Drive Doctor allows Wii owners to connect the console to the PC using a USB cable. From there on in you can take a look at all sorts of stuff in reference to your drive memory and even make on the fly adjustments. They also claim that as the Wii 'homebrew scene grows', the device will come in hand for playing FREELY DOWNLOADABLE software straight from the Wii. The price you may ask? $34.95. Some eagle-eyed readers have spotted that this perhaps a more convential working (via USB) of the serial data cable which can be used in conjunction's with WAB's drive software to run back up games...
PRESS RELEASE

The trouble with most games consoles, is you can't modify the game code when it's running. Sure, you can use tools such as Datel's own Action Replay game enhancers to input all sorts of cheats and enhancements, but there's no straightforward way for amateur programmers and techie tinkerers to get inside the game, investigating how it works and trying out modifications and tweaks you've programmed yourself. Thankfully, if you're a Wii owner Datel has come to the rescue with Drive Doctor, the ultimate aid for the hardcore tinkerer and amateur programmer. With Drive Doctor for your Nintendo Wii, you can gain a unique insight into the under-the-bonnet operation of your console, examining, analysing and altering the Wii drive's memory...

With Drive Doctor in place, you can connect your Wii to your PC using the supplied USB 2.0 cable. You can then review its innermost operations, watching your Wii software in action through Drive Doctor's PC application. You can even add data of your own, all from your PC. Drive Doctor’s memory and command views give you a unique insight into the innermost workings of your Wii’s drive memory, and even lets you make on-the-fly adjustments. You can read status, write data, send control commands, report the drive status and more. By injecting your own code into the data stream, you can create your own effects and experiment with modifying the program. It’s fun! And as the Wii home brew scene grows and prospers, the device will also come in handy for playing freely-downloadable software straight from your console.

Fitting Drive Doctor requires a little soldering, so make sure you have your precision soldering iron handy. Full fitting instructions are supplied. It’s a fairly simple task, requiring you to connect just five wires. After that, the unit just clips to the back of your console. It remains in place even when not in use - just unplug your USB cable and you can use your Wii in the usual way. It's styled to match the console, and completely unintrusive when not in use.

“Halo 3” to Make Entertainment History on Sept. 25

Countdown begins for what promises to be bigger than any movie launch in history; beta preview and collectible Zune-Halo 3 edition digital media player add to early excitement.

In a year when Hollywood is launching its biggest blockbusters ever, a video game is set to conquer them all. “Halo® 3,” the final chapter in the groundbreaking “Halo” trilogy, is set to shatter day-one entertainment sales records when it is released worldwide beginning Tuesday, Sept. 25. Created by legendary developer Bungie Studios and exclusive to the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system, “Halo 3” will set a new standard for interactive storytelling and social gaming by engaging consumers worldwide in Master Chief’s epic battle to save humankind. “Halo 3” will be available to audiences around the world starting Sept. 25 and will release in Europe on Sept. 26.

“‘Halo 3’ is much more than a video game release; it’s the biggest entertainment event of the year,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “On Sept. 25, we intend to deliver a finale that will go down in entertainment history and leave people around the world with an experience that will be shared and enjoyed for years to come.”

Fueling the early buzz around “Halo 3”, Microsoft unveiled the multiplayer beta on the eve of its release at a star-studded event in Hollywood. Beginning tomorrow, May 16, Microsoft Game Studios will kick off the “Halo 3” multiplayer beta, which provides audiences worldwide with an exclusive, early look at some of the multiplayer elements of “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE®. Adding to the excitement, Microsoft is also announcing a special edition Zune™ digital media player inspired by the hugely successful “Halo” franchise. On shelves next month, the Zune-Halo 3 edition comes loaded with a collection of “Halo” content, including videos, soundtracks, trailers, ads and artwork.

In November 2004, the world’s view of video games changed forever with the release of “Halo 2,” which generated a record-setting $125 million in sales within the first 24 hours and changed the way people think about interactive entertainment. Three years later, it remains the most-played game on Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE online gaming and entertainment network, with nearly 1 billion hours of online gaming logged to date.

The unveiling of the “Halo 3” launch date comes on the eve of the release of the “Halo 3” multiplayer beta, which will debut to audiences worldwide via Xbox LIVE on May 16 at 5 a.m. PDT and run through June 6 at 11:59 p.m. PDT.* The “Halo 3” multiplayer beta will provide audiences worldwide with an exclusive early look at some of the multiplayer elements of “Halo 3” on Xbox LIVE. Gamers who are interested in experiencing the multiplayer beta of “Halo 3” can still participate through the purchase of the critically acclaimed, Xbox 360-exclusive title “Crackdown™,” which was launched in February. Starting May 16, the specially marked copies of “Crackdown” will act as a key for gamers to participate in the “Halo 3” multiplayer beta. In addition to giving gamers their first opportunity to get their hands on the new levels, weapons, vehicles and game types, the multiplayer beta will also provide valuable data that Bungie will use in continued development.

The “Halo” franchise has expanded beyond video games into The New York Times’ best-selling books, graphic novels, collectible merchandise and now a new, special edition Zune digital media player. Encased in collectible packaging, the Zune-Halo 3 edition digital media player comes pre-loaded with artwork, trailers and music from all three “Halo” games, as well as an exclusive new episode of “Red vs. Blue” from the fan-adored machinima creator Rooster Teeth Productions LLC. The Zune-Halo 3 edition (estimated retail price $249) will be available exclusively at GameStop starting June 15.

The “Halo 3” multiplayer beta will require gamers to have access to an Xbox 360 console equipped with a hard drive as well as an Xbox LIVE Gold Membership.

Drop that spray can – we're hands on with HOT PIXEL on PSP

In a world where everyone's on the go, it makes sense for gaming to speed up its act too. And when it comes to Atari's upcoming urban mini-game bonanza HOT PXL, time is certainly of the essence.

Taking the part of wacky hip-hop skater/nerd dude Djon, your mission is to complete as many mini-games as possible without messing up, in order to unlock the complete collection.

And believe us when we say these really are mini-mini-games.

Getting our hands on session with HOT PXL in the gloom of Atari's arcade-themed E3 booth, most of the 2D retro-inspired games were over in a matter of seconds, sometimes before we'd realised they'd even started!

Luckily they were also very simple. Examples included avoiding a big oil patch in the road in a top-down racer, zapping a zit on a pretty girl's nose in 'photoshop' or eating the planets in a rocket-powered shopping trolley (you had to be there to understand).

As in the pioneering Wario Ware on the GBA, success was relatively straightforward once you'd worked out what to do, although the controls weren't always as responsive as we would have liked.

But even with 200 mini-games to complete, if that was all HOT PXL was about it would probably be the shortest PSP experience ever.

French gamemaker zSlide has other plans up its sleeve, however, with the mini-games of HOT PXL acting as an attractor for a wider vision of multimedia extravaganza.

One element is the ability to download new content from HOTPXL.com, with graffiti stickers, new tunes and playlists, and photos ranking alongside bonus micro-games. Podcasts about street art and skater culture are already available for you to pull down to your PSP via PC.

You'll also be encouraged to wrap your headphones around the game's original soundtrack (presumably copied from UMD to Memory Stick), and social gaming is another promised feature, with alternative versions of some of those 200 mini-games available either in mega party or turn-based multiplayer modes.

So there should be plenty in the box – always assuming, of course, those 200 mini-games prove up to scratch.

Samsung Anycall 5200 Gaming Phone - With Windows mobile, Sony PSP and Nintendo Games!

The battle for the ultimate mobile gaming platform is heating up. And it’s moving into mobile phone arena.
First generation Nokia N-Gage may have flopped, but Nokia is working on a serious upgrade for it, and has some cool gaming phones, like Nokia N81 in the works.
Then there are these rumors and hints about Microsoft Zune getting into mobile gaming.
And now it looks that Samsung is getting there too, with it’s own mobile gaming phone. Today PhoneDaily has a story about Samsung Anycall 5200 Gaming phone:
Samsung 5200 is built on the same platform as Samsung F520 Ultra Smart phone with interesting dual slide design. The only difference here - Samsung has decided that a gaming phone doesn’t really need full QWERTY keyboard and replaced it with cute gaming controls.
Otherwise Samsung Anycall 5200 is the same F520 Ultra Smart, running Windows Mobile OS with 2.8″ touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera, HSDPA connectivity.
The most interesting thing that can be seen from the pictures, is the Sony PSP logo on the backside of the device and the fact that it’s running what looks like a Nintendo game.

The Nintendo Wii Is A Gaming Revolution

It has been three decades since the first home video game systems started to appear on store shelves and in living rooms. In the passing years those games have become increasingly more sophisticated. Long gone are the rough hewn square graphics and the clumsy sound modulation that many of us remember fondly. In their place are sound and graphics that can imitate life, and games that move quickly and perform much like reality. Up until now, the realistic game performances were reserved for the action on the screen, but with the introduction of the Nintendo Wii, the action has leapt into our living rooms as we become part of the Nintendo Wii game experience.

The Nintendo Wii lets us become part of the game in a way never before seen. Instead of the joystick and buttons that have been a staple of video game play since the days of Atari, the Nintendo Wii uses infrared technology to communicate with a wireless remote control, and it is the remote control of the Nintendo Wii that separates it from the pack.

The Nintendo Wii remote – known officially as Wiimote – is a wireless, handheld, remote control that features conventional buttons and one unconventional and revolutionary feature; it senses movement. The Wiimote has the capability of sensing its position in three dimensional space. This allows the player to interact with the Nintendo Wii in a way that no other game system allows. Move your arm up and the character in the game moves up. Rotate your hand and the same happens in the game. The Nintendo Wii makes you part of the action. Now you can move, jump, swing, and act along with the game characters as if you were one of them.

The Nintendo Wii also has the capability of traditional game play as well. Different controllers can be plugged into the Wiimote, and that allows you to sit down and play games the way you are probably used to playing them, with buttons and joystick. The Wiimote can also be adapted for use with the Wii Zapper – a soon to be released gun-like shell that houses the Wiimote and allows it to be used like a handgun. Or how about the Wii Steering Wheel; a self explanatory device that is perfect with driving games like Monster 4x4 World Circuit.

What we are seeing with the Nintendo Wii is just the tip of the iceberg. In the short time since its release it has taken the gaming world by storm, and it is likely that the innovation will continue to come at a fast and furious pace. The Nintendo Wii platform is truly a technological innovation that will change the way we play games forever.
